Clinical Experience
Each week, a research fellow joins the stroke team at UMMC, working alongside an attending, residents, and medical students. As part of onboarding, fellows complete scribing training modules, qualifying them to document on behalf of residents during the stroke service.
Expectations:
- Pre-round with residents, present cases to the team, and write patient notes in Epic on behalf of residents
- Screen for eligible enrollments into non-acute clinical trials (DISCOVERY, CAPTIVA, ASPIRE), and introduce the trial to eligible patients after discussion with clinical team
- Deliver presentations of relevant stroke and neurology topics to medical students, residents, and attending
- Attend weekly stroke didactics, neurocritical care, and neuroradiology conferences
Research Projects and Group Operations
Research Fellows will work independently (under the mentorship of faculty or the research fellowship directors) and collaboratively on various elements of new or ongoing investigator-initiated research. Fellows are also expected to contribute to the maintenance and growth of the stroke program’s operational infrastructure.
Expectations:
- Management of one or more operational domains (examples: REDCap, website development, meeting/conference scheduling, and screening fellowship applicants)
- Present research in local and national symposiums
- Meaningful contribution to research projects that lead to manuscript submission and publication
- Collaboration for the betterment of the program (examples: presentations to the stroke team and faculty, proactive engagement of their clinical research fellows to share knowledge and clinical pearls)
Acute Care Research Coordinator
Research fellows also serve as research coordinators in collaboration with the Acute Care Research Coordinator (ACRC) group within the Department of Emergency Medicine. On arrival, research fellows will undergo a six-week intensive onboarding where they will develop competency in the trial protocols, patient screening process, informed consent process, and coordination between research and clinical teams.
Expectations:
- Experience with patients requiring time-sensitive treatment, especially in emergency and ICU settings.
- Excellent interpersonal skills when interacting with critically ill patients and their families
- Knowledge of study protocols and departmental resources for coordinating clinical trials
- Call can be taken remotely as long as the study coordinator can respond promptly to a call (immediate call back to verify receipt, on-site in 45 minutes)
Employment:
- As research coordinators, fellows are compensated under a temp-casual pay structure based on hours spent on call, as well as hours spent on active screening and on-site enrollment
