University of Minnesota Stroke Research Fellowship

The Stroke Research Fellowship is an intensive 18–24 month program designed for international medical graduates with a strong interest in neurology. This fellowship provides a unique opportunity to develop advanced research skills, gain hands-on clinical experience, and work as a paid research coordinator for phase II/III clinical trials across multiple hospitals in the region. Research fellows are intentionally prepared for the rigors of neurology residency as well as a future in academic medicine.

Congratulations to Dr. Carl-Lewis Valcinord who won best poster presentation at the 2024 Center for Learning Health System Sciences Conference for his work on targeted-intensity monitoring post-intravenous thrombolysis protocols implemented within the M Health Fairview system.

Congratulations to Dr. Nitin Chakravarthula who delivered an oral presentation at the 2024 CLHSS conference on the implementation of cardiac CTA in acute ischemic stroke within the M Health Fairview Hospital system.

We want to congratulate our Research Fellows, Karen and Maulik, who were awarded Best Poster and Honorable mention in the Advanced Training Category at the Neurology Department's Kennedy Research Symposium. And congratulations to our undergraduate fellowship collaborator, Pramit, who was awarded best poster in the student category.

Congratulations to both of our matriculating research fellows who matched into Neurology residency!

Dr. Ramezani will continue her training at the University of Nebraska and Dr. Silva will be training at the University of Florida. We are excited for the next step in their careers.

The UMN Stroke Research Fellowship was formally founded in 2021.

Through a shared commitment to advancing stroke care, our multicultural research fellowship team pursues the highest standard of neurological treatment and clinical research at the University of Minnesota.

Stroke research fellows are directly integrated into the daily operations of the Stroke Program.

Daily activities blend clinical research and patient care. Fellows observe rounds, attend stroke codes and interventions, and screen patients for ongoing clinical trials. Research fellows regularly present patients and topical reviews to the clinical team.
